Where’s My Refund? is updated no more than once every 24 hours, usually overnight.
When to check status of your refund:
- Within 24 hours after the IRS received your e-filed tax return; or
- 4 weeks after mailing your paper return.
When the IRS processes your tax return and approves your refund, you can see your actual personalized refund date. Even though the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days after we receive your tax return, it’s possible your tax return may require additional review and take longer.
You should only call if it has been:
- 21 days or more since you filed electronically;
- More than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return; or
- The Where’s My Refund? tool directs you to the contact with the IRS.

Precaution: There are too many scam artist out there and they do what they do best. But if you take precaution you will be alright. Some scammer will pretend to call you from the IRS and asking for you send money due to certain error with your return. Don’t let them fool you. IRS would never call you to ask for confidential information such as social security or ask you to send money. Remember not to give anything to the incoming call. If some one said you are from a certain company call you to resolve some issue and they need your information. The only way to know who you talk to is to make sure call the company official phone number(not the number someone give it to you. It may sound obvious but the true is millions of people being fool by scam artist everyday.
